Heading home

We've just boarded the second flight of the journey - Mumbai to London Heathrow. With a three hour transfer time we made it with no time to spare, mostly due to staggeringly inefficient security we had to pass through, then immigration wasn't good.

This morning Jenny had a pedicure while I had my hair cut - first time I've paid for a cut in decades! 

We had a lift to Kolkata Airport which took longer than in the past due to rush hour.

It's 2.00am here; I suspect we'll be pretty tired by the time we reach Heathrow. 

Time to shut down, and change sim card before reaching the UK.

Orkney is at a near halt...

... and so are we. We're now booked on the flight on Monday morning. Hayley and James must be desperate for us to get out of the way, but for now we're enjoying time together.  I knew early this afternoon that the airport was closed tomorrow morning - I phoned to confirm. BA call centre chap assured me it was open, all flight were on time and I can't have phoned the airport as there was no way "the public" could call directly. Eventually he backed down on calling me a liar but insisted his information was the most up to date so he couldn't rebook the flight. A few hours later Loganair emailed to say the flight was cancelled; again BA insisted the flight was still scheduled. Eventually, by forwarding the Loganair email, they were persuaded, but the next available flight is Monday.  Really sorry to be missing out on time with Mithra and family - we'll be arriving Tuesday morning (hopefully!) and flying on to Kolkata Thursd...

We shouldn't be on the Hjaltland!

Already several days late for our departure we've been watching the progress of Storm Isha with trepidation; our latest departure time was Monday 0730 when peak wind is forecast for Kirkwall Airport. Faced with losing further days we've tried to take some control and head to London by other methods. Downsides include very significant extra costs (the most painful is the premium we have to pay British Airways for not using two of our three legs! Seems insane) for travel and accommodation, and the risk of delay by our method now we're away from the full through BA fare. We have been utterly disheartened by British Airways, though, with no flexibility in sorting out problems ("Kirkwall has announced it will be closed" I might say; "It can't be - flight is still showing as on time" would be the BA response hours later "we can do nothing until it's showing cancelled" when it's too late for alternatives!
