Serampore

Jenny lived in Serampore from 8 months until 10 years old. In those days it was a three week trip by ship instead of eight hours in a plane.

Serampore College, where her parents lectured, has a fascinating history, much of it hinted at by the buildings and grounds.

Our Uber for the day drove us to the college via some narrow (and tried some impossible) lanes. It was pleasing to be able to offer advice, remembering the layout from previous visits.

The principal was busy but with multiple copies of a permission slip we strolled the grounds and visited the Carey Library where we met a volunteer curator, Peter. He and Jenny studied various papers and photos, putting names to photos from the  era. This faculty photo is 1968 —Jen's not hard to spot.

On Peter's advice we lunched at the Denmark Tavern. Despite a history longer than the college it is now a superb hotel.

Tomorrow we fly onwards to Mizoram. We're hoping it's nearly as (relatively) peaceful as it used to be.
