Quiet Siaha Sunday

Well, it's Mizoram so Sunday is bound to be quiet.

After breakfast Jen was collected by Dixon and taken to kirk - Evangelical this time. She had a very sociable time, including sharing memories of Serampore College and her parents with the past student we met yesterday.

I headed out for a walk through almost empty streets. A few "Hello, where are you from?" calls, but mostly plodded down slopes and steps dropping about 250m... Then, fortunately, finding a working rickshaw to bring me "home"!

Not only am I staggered that houses stand here, there is a real wastefulness in poor service provision. For example, electricity supply is poor so those who can afford it have a reserve generator and, again for those who can afford air conditioning they also need a voltage stabiliser. With multiple providers of telecoms there are many cables hanging from every pole, in some cases the weight has brought the poles down. I'm guessing all this could be done with a single bundle of fibres?

Lunch on the roof was tomatoes and crackers in the sun. I guess kids who survive to adulthood are pretty good at identifying risky edges.

We had a stroll up to the helipad for sunset, discovering it was the hangout for many local youths. All very pleasant but many photos taken of us. Chatting with a couple of cousins up there was fascinating. He is a water supply engineer currently engaged in the construction of a second reservoir tank at the helipad site. I commented that pumping water from the river in the valley must be a challenge - and it's going to be the sixth highest head of any pump in Asia. She works with mothers and children in domestic abuse; she claims that her job is much easier than most of India as there is little sex discrimination here. They were flying a drone - maybe we'll receive a few photos from them sometime.

Our bill here is paid and we'll shortly be going to supper. Tomorrow morning we're expecting a rickshaw to collect and take us to the Sumo for our drive to Lunglei - about six hours away on very bad roads, we've been told.
