Gilead Special School

Our main reason for ever coming to Mizoram was because the Principal of Serampore College said we must visit. He was a Mizo, who sorted our permits, which were needed back in 2001. He introduced us and we spent 3 weeks visiting the school. They were doing a wonderful job with children with hearing impairments and also with Cerebral Palsy. They were struggling with a small group of children - in their words "we don't know what to do with them".  We were able to help them establish their first class for children with autism (not known to them then) and they quickly appreciated they didn't need to have them tied to their chairs.

When we returned in 2014 it was school holidays, but they were keen for us to visit Mimi, a young child at home. The school wanted to admit her and asked if we'd write a report to support them in a case against the authority.

Today, it has been an absolute delight to visit - a new school site, bigger and so well equipped, but still with dedicated, passionate staff. It's been lovely to meet staff we remember as well as chat to new staff. We were taken into every class and got to chat with many pupils. One of the hearing impaired classes got the globe out to see where we were from - wind, cold and snow signs brought much laughter and thumbs up!

The pre-vocational class are still making plates out of old cartons, but they have some newer equipment, as well as the old press.

We signed the visitor's book and found our entry from 2001.
